Indore civic body warns builders to pay property tax or lose license

As many as fifteen builders and colonizers have been identified by the civic body who have tax dues of Rs 1 lakh and more each.

Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has issued notices to over a dozen private colonizers and builders for defaulting in payment of property tax of their unsold units.

As many as fifteen builders and colonizers have been identified by the civic body who have tax dues of Rs 1 lakh and more each.

IMC’s additional commissioner SK Chaitanya said that a sum of Rs 4 crore is pending in name of private colonizers and builders engaged in various development projects.

“While property tax of sold property is collected from buyers, tax of unsold ones is borne by the builders or colonizers. And when we checked for the record of defaulters with tax dues of Rs 5 lakh and more, around 15 builders and colonizers were found to have defaulted in paying tax dues against property that is still in their names,” he said.

He said that notices have been issued in name of each one of these defaulters, and if they do not clear their dues on time, then their licences would be cancelled with immediate effect. “Any further delay in clearing their tax dues would lead to cancellation of their licence, after which they would not be able to take up any construction project in future,” he added.

IMC is running extensive recovery drive in city and is targeting people with dues of over Rs1 lakh and more. The civic body has already recovered a sum of Rs196 crore from 2.20 lakh accounts.

Besides, all revenue officials and zonal staff to start approaching defaulters to compel them into clearing their dues. All zonal officials have been instructed to collect at least 40 per cent of the total due amount from defaulters of their respective zones.
