Geotube® Dewatering Technology in Sewage Treatment Plants

In the current scenario of an influx of rural population to urban and semi-urban areas in search of livelihood, there is an unprecedented impact on the civic infrastructure including sewage treatment plants. STP’s [Sewage Treatment Plants] with designed and estimated capacities are established depending upon the size of the respective area demand but due to the high surge in the sludge generation, untreated sewage is left into natural water bodies polluting the groundwater endangering public health. The aerators in the STP’s functionally promote microbial growth by pumping the air (oxygen), thereby microbes feed on the organic material forming the flocs which will settle in the aeration pond. Untreated sewage is the leading polluter of water sources in India, causing a host of diseases, agricultural contamination, and environmental degradation.

What are the problems that arise due to untreated sewage?

The aeration ponds that have not been de-sludged/dredged over the years leading to the accumulation of solids at the bed level. The deposition of solids reduces the depth of the aeration pond from designed capacities, resulting in a reduction of hydraulic retention time and pond capacity thereby affecting the efficacy of the STP functionality. Though the maintenance activities by authorities are at regular intervals in removing the accumulated solids, handling the extra volumes generated is a big challenge. Authorities choose to remove the accumulated solids manually but its exposure to an open environment resulting in air and water contamination is a big cause of concern.

What are the solutions to these problems?

The accumulated solids can be removed from the aeration pond by using Geotube® Dewatering Technology which can capture the solids, resulting in regaining the aeration pond capacities to the original. Through an Engineered process, the accumulated sludge is pumped into the Geotube® Dewatering unit for solids liquid separation and achieving a very high solids capture rate. Volume reduction can be as much as 90%, with high solid levels that make removal and disposal easy. TenCate Geotube® dewatering technology enables the recovery of valuable materials, provides structural stability, improves water quality and also reduces storage footprint.

Geotube® containers are available in a variety of sizes, depending on your volume and space requirements. It’s one of the most versatile dewatering technologies available for a variety of industries and one of the most effective technologies.

TenCate Geotube® system Benefits;

  • Low Capital Investment option. Complements existing STP’s to reduce the burden of the seasonal surge in the total volume of Sludge.
  • Captures solids to an estimated range* of 90% to 98% at 95% confidence level.
  • Easy scale up to handle large volumes of sludge in minimal investment and time.
  • Does not pose any health hazard and reduces odour problems and is operated noise-free.
